The story of mercenaries in Libya

The myth of ‘African mercenaries’ in Libya has been used throughout the conflict to demonise the Libyan state, justify NATO intervention and to cover up the relentless racist rebel campaign of mass detention, lynchings and atrocities directed at black Libyans and migrant workers. Amnesty International have stated several times that the accusation of ‘African mercenaries’ being used in Libya against rebel forces is baseless. Despite no evidence the lie persists in the western media and the phrase ‘alleged mercenary’ has been continually used in an attempt to give context to the racist atrocities committed by rebel forces against black Libyans and migrant workers.

NATO in August openly admitted to the use of mercenaries in the war against Libya. However the hypocrisy of the western media should be noted when they refer to NATO mercenaries as ‘private security’.

*Mahdi al-Harati who is of Irish/Libyan descent has been widely portrayed as a ‘freedom fighter’ in the British press. He left Ireland to fight with the rebels and supposedly ‘free’ Libya but it turns out he was paid over €200,000 by the American intelligence services. Upon hearing that an Irish gang had stolen his blood-money he quickly resigned from his military post in Libya and returned home.

The Sunday World can reveal that gardai are investigating the robbery of two envelopes containing €200,000 in €500 notes from the home of Mahdi al-Harati in Firhouse, south Dublin, and that the money trail is leading to the Rathkealers. Al-Harati was in Libya following the successful campaign that toppled Gaddafi when the rebel’s house was broken into on October 6.

Astonished officers made contact with Mahdi al-Harati who told them that he had travelled to France, the United States and Qatar the previous month and that representatives of an American intelligence agency had given him a significant amount of money to help in the efforts to defeat Gaddafi. He said he left two envelopes with his wife in case he was killed and took the rest of the cash with him when he went back to Libya.

Just days after the robbery in his home, al-Harati resigned from the council and returned to Dublin and has since been formally interviewed by gardai. Astonished detectives have launched a major probe into the daring robbery and issued an alert to all banks to be on the lookout for €500 notes, which are extremely rare in Ireland but would be relatively common in other European countries.
